In 1984, the United States government began formally recognizing social workers yearly in the month of March. The emphasis was introduced by Democratic senators and was co-sponsored by Republican President Ronald Regan, who signed it into law. 

Lowndes County Board of Education Head Start family and Community Partnerships Manager Laura James-Hunter said the program celebrates the emphases, honoring the personnel who advocate for Lowndes County families.

“One particular aspect that makes National Social Work month extra fun are the yearly themes,” James-Hunter said. “The theme for Social Work Month 2024 is ‘Empowering Social Workers: Inspiring Action, Leading Change.’ 

James Hunter said she and her department are committed to providing highly qualified comprehensive services. 

“Lowndes County Board of Education Head Start would like to acknowledge Family Advocates Practitioners Shirley Davis at Central Head Start, Aundrey Fountain at Fort Deposit Head Start, and Equinda Peterson-Jackson at Steele Head Start and all social workers nation-wide for their hard work,” she said.
