Lowndes County students shine bright in regional science fair

The annual Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GEARSEF) was held on Mar. 11 at Auburn University Montgomery (AUM).
Susan Butts, (Lowndes County Public Schools LCPS) Education Specialist, expressed how proud she is of the students and extended a congratulations from the LCPS Board of Education.
“Congratulations to all of the Lowndes County Public School’s GEARSEF participants,” Butts said. “I also want to give a special shout out to the winners from Central High School, Hayneville Middle School and Lowndes County Middle School because their dedication to science and innovation serves as an inspiration to all of us.”
The competition concluded with a burst of excitement as students from Central High School, Hayneville Middle School and Lowndes County Middle School received awards.
The competition not only celebrates the achievements of young scientists but also fosters a spirit of curiosity and discovery.
Cory Matthews, a ninth grader at Central High School, won second place in the Animal and Plant Sciences Division for his project entitled “Living In Harmony.”
Karis Mickle and Kaitlyn Price, a junior and senior at Central High School, won third place in the Chemistry Division for their project entitled ‘Puff, Puff, Pass’.
In addition, Jaquan Wright, an eighth grader at Hayneville Middle School, placed in the Juniors Division for his project entitled “How Do Worms Affect Plant Growth.” Aileen Fonseca and Miracle Scott, eighth graders at Lowndes Middle School, received commendations for mathematics and statistics for their project entitled “The Power of pH.”
All winners will go on to compete in the Alabama State Science Fair that will be held at Auburn University on Apr. 13.
Matthews also received recognition for the Award of Biology for Creativity and Application of Biological Principles from AUM. Jamaya McConnico and Crantasia Jordan who are seniors and Zaryah Flowers who is a junior received the AUM Department of Chemistry Award for their project entitled “Print Palooza.” The awards included $100 from AUM.
