The first Lowndes County District-Wide Math Scholar Bowl was held at Lowndes Middle School on Mar. 7.

The event not only celebrated the talents of young mathematicians but also promoted a love for math and problem-solving in the district’s students. All Lowndes County Public Schools (LCPS) were well represented with approximately 145 students who participated in the thrilling display of mathematical aptitude.

The Math Scholar Bowl is one component of LCPS’s overall STEM Program which aims to increase interest and participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related career fields. All students that participated in the Math Scholar Bowl received participation certificates and a treat bag. Each grade level had students that won first, second or third place prizes which included Wal-Mart gift cards totaling $1,200 in the following amounts: $50 prizes for first place, $30 for second place, and $20 for third place winners.

There were a total of 45 winners, spanning across seven grade levels.

LCPS will be hosting a field trip on May 3 to reward the hard work of the district’s students for participating in both the District-Wide Science Fair and the District-Wide Math Scholar Bowl. The students and select faculty will travel to Birmingham to visit the McWane Science Center and Dave and Busters.

These activities would not be possible without the county’s sponsors: Hayneville Telephone Company, Alabama State University Inservice Center, Representative JaMichael Lawrence, First Citizens Bank, Lily Missionary Baptist Church and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department.
