Jackson-Steele Elementary School (JSES) celebrated Read Across America Week March 2-8. Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading and is geared toward fostering a love for reading and learning. The program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and resources.

Jackson-Steele Elementary School’s amazing students and staff had a wonderful time celebrating Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss’ birthday with fun-filled activities focusing on the importance of literacy and the joy of reading.  The faculty welcomed guest readers — Lowndes County law enforcement, parents, retired teachers and others — into the classrooms to share a story with the students. The Cat in the Hat even made an appearance in the classes.

Fun-themed days were included, such as pajama day, crazy socks day, sports day, college/career wear day,and more, scheduled throughout the week. As a part of the Read Across America celebration, the students were thrilled when they were served green eggs and ham for breakfast one morning by our wonderful cafeteria staff in the lunchroom.

Additionally, each day was a different spirit day and there were fun activities to promote a love of reading including a “Drop Everything and Read” event during which the whole school participated in a read-a-thon to foster a love for reading and learning. Everyone in the school had to D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) throughout the week at JSES.

Media Specialist Annie P. Hayes worked alongside staff, parents, and volunteers to bring an immersive Seuss-like atmosphere directly to the students so that no grade level would be left out of the fun at JSES.

Hayes said, “This is a time to remind students that reading is fundamental for life; it’s the foundation for every job and every situation and it fosters lifelong learning. Not only is reading important, but it can also be fun and enjoyable.”

Each of the represented steps toward Jackson-Steele Elementary School’s goal of creating a community where literacy thrives. The school would like to thank everyone for taking the time out to support this educational event and we were so grateful for the enthusiasm and support of our reading partners.
