In Friday night football action:
The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Class A Region 1 Lowndes Academy Rebels went on the road to face Freeport High School in Freeport, Fla., Friday night, where the Rebels were defeated 34-0.
Lowndes Academy head football coach Bob Taylor said Mason McCurdy acquitted himself well in the loss with 10 tackles on defense. But he said the Rebels suffered five turnovers in the game.
“We didn’t play very well tonight,” Taylor said. “Freeport has a good football team. They have tremendous speed, and it showed tonight.”
Taylor said, “We have a lot of work to do this week to get ready for a good Crenshaw team.”
Lowndes, now 1-1 on the season, will host Class A Region 1 opponent Crenshaw next Friday night.
After leading 28-22 at the half, the difference in fresh legs from larger numbers saw the Central High Lions fall to 4A Bullock County High School at home 58-34.
Central head football coach Quinn Hambrite said he was proud of his 2A Region 3 team for its performance against a 4A opponent.
Hambrite said of his team, “The depth chart played a factor in this game. We hung in there athletically with them. I’m very proud of the team… they fought, even through injuries.”
He said, “The first half, we had them running. We had them on skates. They were calling time outs.”
Hambrite said Bullock County dressed 55 players while his team dressed 27. And he said his kids play pretty much both ways offense and defense.
He also said the final score did not reflect how hard his kids played.
Hambrite noted the play of Keegan Blackman, David Baldwin, Henry Gordon, Justin Taylor and Diontavious Holcombe.
Central now 0-2 will face 2A Region 3 opponent Zion Chapel on the road next Friday.
The 2A Region 3 Calhoun Tigers opened the 2017 season on the road with a 49-0 loss to 2A Region 4 Keith.
The O-1 Tigers will host 2A Region 3 Goshen next Friday night.
