While the Lowndes Academy Lady Rebels varsity came up short Friday night, the varsity boys Rebels improved to 4-4 on the season with a 61-35 shellacking of Wilcox Academy.
The Rebels led 19-7 at the half, pulled away to a 55-21 lead after three quarters and closed the Wildcats out for a 61-35 final with subs getting play in the late stages.
David Hussey led all scorers with 22 points and Brian Rayburn had 17.
Rebels varsity head basketball coach Matt Marshall said he team has been working on sharing the ball, as well as the full court press. And he said he felt the press will help put his Rebels over the top. He said his Rebels can pressure the ball, are quick and lanky and Friday night’s game was a good sign for the team’s future the remainder of the season.
He said the Rebels have a lot of inexperience and it has taken them time to figure out the rotations and defense to run. He said they also had practice time to pull it all together.
Marshall said, “I thought Brian Rayburn had a great game” and he credited Hussey for his defensive pressure. But he said, “It was a team effort,” with great play by a couple of players who did not start, Brady Eiland and Rayburn.
He said, “That’s what we’re preaching right now… Share the ball, doesn’t matter if you start, it’s how you finish. And the sooner I can get them to buy into it, the better we will be.
