The Lowndes Academy boys and girls varsity found success on the hardwood Monday night in a home encounter with South Montgomery Christian Academy (SMCA).
The varsity boys defeated SMCA 65-42 in their opening contest of 2015.
David Hussey led the Rebels with 25 points, Brian Rayburn and Wade Howard scored 11 points each, and Brady Eiland scored 10 points.
Lowndes Academy head boys varsity basketball coach Matt Marshal said his Rebels forced SMCA into 35 turnovers in this contest.
The Rebels led 30-20 at the half and pulled away 49-26 after three quarters.
The Lowndes Academy varsity Lady Rebels defeated SMCA 46-33 to go 2-0 in 2015. However, Lowndes Academy head girls varsity basketball coach Jeff Lovell called it his team’s worst performance in five years.
Abby Ray led the Lady Rebels with 11 points while Madolynn Headley and Laiken Hussey scored seven points each.
Lovell said his Lady Rebels faced a very good SMCA team that made his team do some things it didn’t really want to do. He said, “Not making excuses, that was probably our worst effort in the last five years since I’ve been here.”
However, Lovell said his team had enough depth to pull some kids in and really picked it up on defense to force 40 turnovers on SMCA, which he said he felt was the difference in the game.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well tonight,” Lovell said.
The head varsity girls coach said he thought it was his second five players who stepped up and named Hannah Rogers and Laura Jean McCurdy.
Lovell said McCurdy did a great job on the press and probably created 10 turnovers against SMCA herself.
