Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams confirmed that the Bancorp South Bank in Burkville off U.S. Highway 80 was robbed Thursday and the incident is under investigation by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
Williams said all information, however, would have to come from the FBI.
The Signal has reached out to the FBI but calls have not been returned at this point.
Williams said the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the robbery at 10 a.m.
John Lyon, president of Banacorp Bank South In Fort Deposit said, “All we can confirm is there was a robbery and it is being handled by the FBI. We opened briefly this morning but chose to close for the rest of the day but will be back open normal time and normal hours Monday.”
A note on the bank door and drive thru read, “Sorry, we are closed due to an emergency. This office wil reopen as soon as possible. Our nearest office is the Hayneville Branch, Hayneville.”
Douglas H. Astralaga, Mobile media coordinator and supervisory special agent for the Mobile Field Office of The FBI declined to comment on the case.
