The Calhoun Tigers claimed their first win of 2013 on Friday the 13 of September defeating Zion Chapel on the road for a 2A Region 3 win 44-14.

However, Friday the 13 wasn’t so lucky for Lowndes Academy and Central High. The Rebels fell to Patrician 44-26 and Central fell to Elba 57-18, also regional contests.

That victory makes the Calhoun Tigers 1-2 overall but 1-1 in regional play.

Calhoun head football coach Bill Williamson said Jamine Jordan scored two touchdowns, Jamarcus Davison scored one touchdown, Jemarcus Rhimes scored one touchdown, and Author Phifer Jr,. scored one touchdown and Devontae McMeans scored one touchdown.

“Jeffery Moss and Jermichael Jordan, a latecomer to the team this season, stood out on defense,” Williamson said.

Williamson said prior to the Zion Chapel game he was going to try one group of linemen on offense and one group on defense to help boost his team’s morale and keep them from getting tired. He put that into practice and it paid off.
He had also said he was encouraged by his team’s play the previous week.

Williamson said of the win, “We needed it real bad. It will make practice go a lot better next week.”

The win should also put a little swag in the Tigers’ step as they return to home field play Friday, Sept. 20 for another regional contest against Goshen.

The Lowndes Academy Rebels fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in 2A Region 2 AISA Play on a 44-26 road loss to Patrician.

The Rebels were facing a team that had beaten Clarke Prep, and Lowndes Academy head football coach Matt Marshall said Patrician would be a physical game. But Marshall said, “I think we can score points.”

While the Rebels were not able to slow Patrician down enough, David Hussey led the Rebels on defense with 13 tackles and a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown. He caught a 35-yard pass reception for a touchdown, as well, on the offensive side of things.

Garrett Headley threw the 35-yard touchdown pass to Hussey. And Headley scored on a 65-yard kickoff return.

Quarterback Cody Harrell was 7-15 for 60 yards passing and scored on an 18-yard rushing touchdown.

The Rebels will be on the road again Friday, Sept. 20 at Abbeville in a non-regional game.

The Central High Lions are still looking for their first win of 2013. Having fallen to Elba on the road in a 2A Region 3 contest 57-18.

The loss puts the Lions at 0-3 overall and 0-2 in regional play with a date with Luverne for yet another regional encounter on the road Friday, Sept. 20.

Central head football coach James Bibb said his Lions started off well, but got into a field position game with Elba and made a lot of errors on special teams.

He said, “There is always something we have to work on and try get better at.”

Bibb said the Lions kickoff coverage wasn’t good and Elba recovered three onside kicks. He said his team was also plagued with penalties.

T.J. Saffold was once again the bright spot for Central scoring touchdown on pass receptions of 50-yards 35-yards. And Jacquez Bolling scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass.

Alex Bryant was the man tossing the ball for those touchdowns.
