The Lowndes Academy rebounded from a crushing 52-22 regional loss to Clarke Prep at home last week to defeat Sparta before the home crowd in Hayneville 37-12 Friday night.
The Rebels improved their overall record to 1-1, but as this was not a regional encounter, they will have to wait to play Patrician on the road next week to improve their regional standing.
Still Lowndes Academy head football coach Matt Marshall was well pleased.
Junior quarterback Cody Harrell scored three touchdowns on runs of 5-yards, 3-yards and 1-yard. And he added a 27-yard field goal to his resume.
Senior wide receiver Garrett Headley scored on a 15-yard run. And junior Thomas Ward scored a touchdown on an 8-yard run.
The Rebels rushed 33 times for 257 yards with Ward leading the way with 10 carries for 114 yards. Headley had nine carries for 70 yards and Harrell had nine carries for 52-yards.
David Hussey had two pass receptions for 39 yards. And on defense Calvinar Thomas had 11 tackles while Headley had nine. And Gray Johnson recorded two sacks.
“I though our boys played really hard,” Marshall said. “They finished every quarter. We had a long talk this afternoon about finishing and being focused and intense and executing.”
He said his Rebels played well both on offense and defense. While they bent a little, he said, they also made some big plays.
“I was really proud of the enthusiasm they showed for each other and the way they came out and played together tonight,” Marshall said.
