Alabama’s eighth annual sales tax holiday for school-related items begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2 and ends at midnight Sunday Aug. 4 giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, books and clothing free of state’s four percent sales or use tax, according to the Alabama Retail Association.
Local governments had until July 2 to join the state sales tax holiday.
The only Lowndes County government confirmed to be participating in the sales tax holiday this weekend is the town of Hayneville.
Officials for the Lowndes County Commission and the town of White Hall and Lowndesboro confirmed those towns are not participating.
Hayneville Mayor Kelvin J. Lawrence said, “Our take is even though sales tax is our main source of revenue as far as our general fund for the city of Hayneville, we also felt that if was also an opportunity to give some of our people in the community (Hayneville and the surrounding area) a break on sales tax in reference to the state sales tax holiday.”
