Suffering their first home loss in two years, the Lowndes Academy Lady Rebels varsity came up a single point short in an effort to avenge their own loss of the season against the Wilcox Academy Lady Wildcats falling 32-31 Friday.
The loss dropped the Lady Rebels to 7-2 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 8-2.
Abby Ray and Sara Anna McIntosh led the Lady Rebels with 12 points each. Wilcox was led by Sidney Sessions with 13 points and Nancy Jordan with 11.
Lady Rebels head basketball coach Jeff Lovell said of his team’s performance, “Well, I thought we played hard in the first half and got to an early lead (17-11 at the midway point).” But he said the Lady Wildcats were tough to handle inside the second act, “Not a very good matchup for us.”
Lovell said his girls turned the ball over and said, “I think we played to keep from getting beat rather than play to win. So, we went into a little shell and got conservative.”
He said the team will go back to the drawing board and work hard over Christmas.
Lovell said Ray and McIntosh played well. But he said the team did not play well on defense.
He said the Lady Rebels shot 25 percent from the floor Friday and while they averaged focing 35 to 40 turnovers per game, but only had about 20 against the Lady Wildcats.
