An Editorial Opinion of The Lowndes Signal
This week’s issue of The Lowndes Signal highlights a few of the successes experienced by Lowndes County communities. An announcement that Lowndes Middle School is welcoming Chris Chambers as principal accompanies an introduction of the Signal’s first high school summer intern and a new pastor for Hayneville Baptist Church on page two.
But among those community high notes, are a few articles pointing to some work yet to be accomplished towards ensuring progress for Lowndes County citizens.
On page 2, an article details how Commissioner Robert Harris’s alleged bid to discredit Sheriff Chris West failed when Hayneville Municipal Judge Kameisha Logan dismissed his charges he filed in August 2024 and again in February.
Pages of our sister newspaper, The Greenville Advocate are busting at the seams, so to speak, brimming with articles heralding the cooperation of local leaders toward progress in Butler County.
Frankly, it’s refreshing to bear witness to the good efforts of Butler County Commissioners, the Butler County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and others who work tirelessly for the good of local residents, bringing much-needed change and improvements important to our communities.
Recently, the Advocate illuminated the Butler County Commission’s approval of a grant funding restoration of the courthouse clock. The Sheriff’s department added crucial equipment recently, and the Advocate was happy to make the announcement.
Recently, Butler County Schools Superintendent Joe Eiland congratulated newsroom staff on receiving Alabama Press Association (APA) awards for covering local news, calling Greenville Newspapers, which include the Advocate, the Signal and The Luverne Journal “precious resources for Butler, Lowndes and Crenshaw counties.”
We are grateful for the kind words and want our community members to know our successes are only possible due to the efforts of local citizens and leaders. And while we love sharing the good news happening around the 4-5, we are duty-bound and committed to helping municipal governments remain accountable.
It is our aim to cover all that community members value, and we hope the articles around what’s really happening can provide the transparency needed for real and lasting change.
