Imago Dei Church is preparing for a community-wide event aimed at better serving the residents of its local community.

On Saturday, June 7, the congregation will host Community Day, an event which will continue on the first Saturday of every month. Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the family-friendly event will feature a wide variety of activities for all ages.

Volunteers will be grilling hot dogs, available free to all guests. Giveaways include clothes, shoes, home decor, furniture and more, all free thanks to the generosity of donors.

The event resumes a function left off when food distributions ceased a year ago, when the congregation moved from rented space on U.S. Highway 80 to its current Maple Street location.

“We’ve been waiting until we got in the building and got settled to be able to start this,” said pastor and church-planter Davey Lyon. “We want to provide a regular ministry to the community and what we learned from the food distribution was that consistency is good.

““The clothes we have were donated when we were [in our old location] and came from a ministry in Wilcox County. We’ve got other items to give away and if it’s not all given away, we’ll keep it for when there is a need. We want to be able to meet immediate needs, and we are definitely going to rely on donations from individuals.”

Lyon emphasized that monthly giveaways will be dependent on the generosity of the community.

“As the Lord provides, through the generosity of others, we want to be a conduit that passes that along to the community,” Lyon said. “We’re going to be completely dependent on what the Lord provides through others. Our plan is to advertise and let people know what we have each month so they can see if it’s something that meets their needs.”

Children’s activities available will feature games, basketball and access to the church playground. Lyon said church volunteers will be on hand, but the congregation welcomes community members, especially younger men, who have a heart for serving their community.

“We realize we can do more together than apart,” Lyon said. “My prayer for every Bible-believing and teaching church is that they would open the doors and the pews would be full. We want to help the churches in our community. We realize that God has not put us here to reach the whole county, but a specific area.”

In addition to the day’s offerings, Montgomery chiropractor, Dr. Brian West, who is donating his time to offer free chiropractic services.

“We met Brian through the Montgomery Baptist Association,” Lyon said. “God put it on his heart to come to Lowndes County and serve with his God-given gifts in ministry. “He said he wanted to use the opportunity to share the gospel and physically help people. So, the Lord’s providence worked it all out.”

Lyon, alongside his wife Amber and other church members, will use the day and each monthly event to connect with families and ultimately, to share the Gospel message.

“We know that there are people that are physically in need, but all our greatest need is spiritual. For us to be able to meet people, love on them in Jesus’s name and share the Gospel with them, the hope of Jesus, we want to see God’s Kingdom grow in Lowndes County. We want to see people saved and serving the community.

“We know God offers us something in Jesus that the world can’t offer us — salvation and eternal life, hope, joy and peace. We want to be able to pray with and for people. We want to be able to invite people to come to Jesus.”
