An editorial opinion of The Lowndes Signal

Lowndes County Public Schools Head Start is an early childhood education program providing the building blocks of a solid foundation to the area’s youngest scholars. On May 1, the program hosted its 52nd annual appreciation banquet to thank families and community members who are an integral part of the program’s success.

Organizers honored parents, grandparents, teachers and community leaders for their support and awarded each honoree with a trophy during the patriotic-themed gala held at the RSA Activity Center in Montgomery. Three of those recognized as community members were representatives of the media outlets which share the news of good things the program is doing for children as well as their families — WSFA Chief Meteorologist Josh Johnson, WAKA News Reporter Teresa Lawson and The Lowndes Signal Regional Editor Lanell Downs Smith.

Media members take great pride in covering some of life’s most important moments, especially when coverage involves sharing about all the good things happening in our community. It’s a rare, but precious moment, when the joy and pride of being a news reporter is coupled with a thank you for doing the job well, especially when it means we had just a small part in helping area children and their families.

This time of year is filled with ceremonies, honors and banquets. We are usually there, documenting the celebrations and the accomplishments they highlight. It is not often we are on the receiving end, but it makes our satisfaction even sweeter than the honor we already receive from the trust our communities place in our words.

On behalf of The Lowndes Signal and the other media members recognized at the banquet, we wish to express our sincere gratitude for the kindness of the Lowndes County Board of Education, Superintendent Samita Jeter, Head Start Director Angela J. Calhoun and Family and Community Partnerships Manager Laura James Hunter. You make covering Head Start so easy, and we are grateful for your kindness to our staff and our community.
