Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded 10 grants totaling nearly $430,000 to provide services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault while prosecuting perpetrators in those cases.
The grants were awarded to domestic violence agencies as well as law enforcement and prosecution offices covering 25 counties in central and south Alabama. Two of the awards are going to organizations — the Montgomery Area Family Violence Program and One Place Family Justice Center — that provide services for people living in Lowndes, Butler and Crenshaw counties.
“Domestic violence and sexual abuse are despicable crimes in which victims need both immediate and long-term attention to help them overcome the trauma of these acts,” Ivey said. “These agencies and departments work tirelessly to provide needed services for the victims and to investigate, arrest and prosecute those who commit such crimes.”
The awards were made available to the state through a program from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) is administering the awards.
“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of these agencies and organizations and the work they do to assist victims,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
