Lowndes County Public Schools (Future Farmers of America) FFA members participated in Agriculture Advocacy Day, April 1, visiting Alabama’s Capital and meeting with District 23 Alabama Senator Robert Stewart and District 19 Alabama Senator Merika Coleman. Students also shared a moment with Gov. Kay Ivey.
“It was a pleasure to welcome the students and advisor of the Lowndes County FFA to my office,” Stewart said. “I was thoroughly impressed by their leadership, poise and passion for agriculture. They truly represent the best that District 23 has to offer and have a bright future ahead.”
Agriscience instructor Kelsey Thomas said the emphasis brings together FFA members from across the state and lawmakers for agricultural education.
“It’s a way for students to share the importance of FFA and agricultural programs with state legislators, raise awareness about issues affecting agriculture, and support policies that benefit the agriculture community.” Thomas said. “The event typically involves FFA members visiting the Alabama State House, meeting with state senators and representatives, and participating in educational and advocacy activities.
The emphasis is an opportunity for students to experience the political process and learn about the impact of legislation on agriculture and education. FFA members had the chance to observe an Alabama House session where new bills were being introduced and debated.
Thomas reached out to Stewart, who represents Lowndes County in Alabama’s Senate, to let him know the students would attend the event.
“We were encouraged to stop by his office,” Thomas said. “We also visited the office of Rep. Kelvin Lawrence but he was in a committee meeting at the time. Rep. Coleman served as one of the keynote speakers for this event along with Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter.”
As a national organization, FFA aims to develop leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education, Thomas said. Founded in 1828, FFA is one of the largest student organizations in the U.S. with chapters in middle schools, high schools and post-secondary institutions.
