Running Tigers place at regional track meet

The Calhoun Running Tiger track team competed at the River Region Invitational Friday, March 21. Student athletes pulled out all the stops to place in several categories, individually and in special teams.

“They truly showed what it takes to be great, and I can only see this team getting better and better,” said SGM Lenora White, The Calhoun School Junior Officer Training Corps instructor and track team coach. “Several athletes received medals for their achievements.”

The 4×800 boys’ team, made up of Joshua Simmons Jr., Jereh Pettway, Takeri Wilson and Jeremichael Smith won 2nd place medals in their event. .

Jamara Taylor won a 3rd place medal in the Girls 100 Hurdles. Bryant Lambert won 3rd place medals in the boys shot put and boys’ javelin. Calhoun’s 4 x 400 girls’ team — Samiya Sellers, Mariah Champion, Jamara Taylor and Lillian Timmons — won the second-place medal in their competition.

Jayden Coleman won a second-place medal in the boys’ javelin event. Destinee Brown won third-place in the girls’ javelin category. 

Placing third in the boys’ 1,600-meter race was Robert Sellers, Jr. Sellers also placed third in the boys’ 800-meter race and Keonte Abrams won a second-place medal in the competition. 

The Calhoun boys’ A team — Keonte Abrams, Robert Sellers Jr, Carmelo Brown and Davyon Lewis — and the B team — Joshua Simmons Jr., Jereh Pettway, Jaden Gray and Takeri Wilson — placed (A) second (A) and third (B). 

White said the team’s successes are notable, especially because six athletes were unable to attend due to spring break vacation. 

“We will definitely be ready for our next meet, because all the athletes know what they have to improve and work on.” White said. 

The Calhoun Running Tigers are coached by White and Robert Sellers, Sr.
