According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a high risk (level 5 out of 5) for severe storms has been issued for much of the area for Saturday afternoon through the night. Strong, long-tracked tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and hail up to 2 inches are possible.
The tornado threat is going to be during the night time hours Friday and Saturday night. Many people will be asleep (many won’t).
A wind advisory has been issued for all of central Alabama from Saturday 7 a.m. to Sunday 1 a.m. Sustained winds will be 10-20 mph and peak gusts could be as high as 40 mph in many places.
This wind is the wind outside of any thunderstorms, so the afternoon leading up to the development of storms, and then after the storms pass by. Be aware of downed trees and powerlines, any loose items that could blow around, and high profile vehicles may need to use caution.
The need to have good, reliable ways to get warnings is crucial during the night. Having multiple ways to receive warnings ensures you will receive the warning. Even if one method fails, you still have other ways to receive the alerts.
A weather radio is a great option. Do not rely on outdoor sirens. These are hard to hear from inside a building. Also call/check on family and friends!
Your safety is paramount, so please ensure you have a way to receive warnings.
Stay aware of the weather, have multiple ways to receive warning information, and plan your safe place and safety kit!
