Overnight storms leave widespread power outages

Alabama Power is reporting that severe weather overnight has caused statewide power outages. Storm crews were staged and ready with an additional 1,200 outside storm resources added to the storm response team.

At 6:00 a.m., 38,400 Alabama Power customers were without power in central Alabama and 129,000 were without power statewide as a result of overnight severe weather.
“While damage assessments are ongoing, early reports indicate a number of broken/fallen trees resulting in downed wire,” said Alabama Power representative Michael Jordan in a media release. “Crews are actively working to restore service as safely and quickly as possible.”

At 10 a.m., the website findenergy.com  reported 2,329 Lowndes County customers without power. The breakdown by energy provider was:

  • Alabama Power – 1,539;
  • Pioneer Electric – 724;
  • Central Alabama Electric Cooperative – 56; and
  • Dixie Electric – 10

The National Weather Service in Birmingham reported the storm threat ended around 5 a.m. The agency dispatched survey teams to Hale and Perry counties, the areas hardest hit in the office’s coverage territory.
