Tigers, Lions wrap up roundball

Lowndes County Public Schools are rounding up their basketball season. With area titles in the bag and playoffs beginning Wednesday, the hardwood is still heating up with the action.

Calhoun Boys Snag Area

The Calhoun School varsity boys snagged the Class 2A Area 5 championship Thursday, Feb. 6 with a win over local rival, Central High School, 75-53. The true cat fight, hosted by Calhoun, was the third time the Tigers have beat the Lions this season, with earlier wins on Dec. 14, 2024, 75-64 and Jan. 18, 91-74.

Senior standout, Tyler Robertson, is ranked No. 6 in the state for scoring points, now at 385.

The Tigers defeated Greene County, 67-50 on Saturday. Then Tuesday evening, the Tigers met LaFayette in the first playoff round, sustaining a 74-45 loss to end the season at 13-9.

Calhoun Girls Area Runners-up

The Lady Tigers took it to the hoop, securing the Class 2A Area 4 runners-up title with a tough playoff loss to the Highland Home Flying Squadron, 46-39.

The team delivered a strong performance, with standout action from Kamelia Hunter who put up 15 points and had six points and three steals. Alivia Mason went 5-for-9 while adding 12 points and gaining four steals. 

The two were named to the Alabama High School Athletic Association All-Tournament team.

Now at 10-16 overall, the Lady Tigers went 4-2 in the region and sustained a season-ending loss to Tuscaloosa Academy Friday, 56-39.

Central Boys Area Runners-up

The Central High School varsity boys wrapped up their 2024-25 basketball season, putting a bow on it by earning the Class 2A Area 5 runners-up title. The Lions ended a four-game winning streak with the 75-53 loss to Calhoun before a Saturday loss to Tuscaloosa Academy, 100-61.

Ending the season 12-8 overall and 4-3 in area play, the Lions delivered standout performances from a few of their key players.

Senior Iyanis Wallace ends his senior season with an average of 20.9 points per game and a career total of 686 shooting points. Junior Christian Lawrence is averaging 27.2 points per game and this year put up 261 points while gaining 83 rebounds.
