The Lowndes County Commission held its last meeting before the Nov. 5 general election on Oct. 28. The meeting was the last for District 3 commissioner, Joshua Simmons, who will step down after a loss in the race for the seat to newly elected Fletcher Hayes.
Commissioner Robert Harris, who represents district 1, read a statement thanking Simmons for his service to the county.
“I would like to tell the commissioners, mainly Commissioner Simmons, that I appreciate serving with him the eight years that he’s been here,” Harris said. “He helped us move [the county] forward to a certain extent, and I appreciate him for his support. I appreciate him for his forward thinking as well as independently thinking and making his own decisions as well. And we, I certainly do appreciate that as well, and I just hope that he never gives up.”
Afterward Simmons expressed his gratitude for Harris’s remarks.
The commission’s first meeting after the election is scheduled for Nov. 11 and will likely be rescheduled in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
