UPDATE: Lowndes County Road 26 reopens after truck fire

A truck hauling live chickens caught fire on Lowndes County Road 26 Wednesday, blocking the highway until around 8 p.m.

Lowndes County first responders were dispatched to a truck fire Wednesday afternoon which closed both lanes in the 7400 block of Lowndes County Road 26 in Hope Hull. By 8 p.m., the road had been cleared and reopened for travel.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency, and the Burkville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call and found a transfer truck and trailer on fire.
“Upon arrival, contact was made with the driver, who was unharmed,” said Lowndes County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Nick Cognasi. “It was determined that the truck carried consumables and was not a danger to any residents in the area.”
According to Lowndes County EMA Director Rodney Rudolph, the truck carried chicken products which were destroyed by the fire.
“The road was blocked until around 8 p.m. last night,” Rudolph said. “It was a load of chickens. Some people may not have chicken at their Christmas dinner this year.”
Cognasi advised travelers should use an alternate route through the area while cleanup continued. At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, both lanes of travel on the road remained closed while agencies worked to clear the scene, and by 8 p.m. workers had removed debris and reopened the road.
