The Elmore Bolling Initiative (TEBI) is partnering with the Lowndes County Board of Education to offer ACT college entrance test preparation for juniors at Calhoun and Central high schools for the 2021-2022 school year.

Students will meet with instructors provided by TEBI on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the school year.  Math is the primary focus area, including algebra through algebra two, as well as geometry. Students will also review English grammar and science.

The ACT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. It is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test administered by ACT, Inc. The purpose of the ACT test is to measure a high school student’s readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants.

This year marks the second year that TEBI has offered the ACT test preparation program at high schools in Lowndes County. Last year’s program was offered online due to COVID-19.

To kick off the program, Lowndes County native and TEBI president, Josephine Bolling McCall, addressed students at both high schools and encouraged them to apply for the scholarships and Chromebook computers that TEBI awards annually to Lowndes County high school seniors.

McCall is the author of The Penalty for Success: My Father was Lynched in Lowndes County, Alabama, published in 2015. McCall’s father, Elmore Bolling, was not able to read or write himself, but he placed a high value on education for his seven children and one of the ways that TEBI carries on his legacy is by focusing on education for the children of Lowndes County today.
