Members of the Lowndes County Area Chamber of Commerce met recently and turned their eyes toward the future.

The Chamber is looking ahead to growing membership and working for the betterment of Lowndes County in 2020.

Chamber President Dr. Ozelle Hubert and about 10 attendees discussed a variety of topics and Rep. Kelvin Lawrence was a guest at the meeting. Hubert spoke about the need for broadband Internet and said that Hayneville Mayor David Daniel was in meetings in Montgomery discussing grants and future projects.

Lawrence addressed the group about grants and issues that could come up in the Legislature in 2020. He encouraged the Chamber to continue its study of the feasibility and necessity of a hospital for Lowndes County.

Hubert noted that statistics he’s seen show Lowndes County as having the highest death rate per capita for auto accidents.

“We’re more than 20 minutes from and emergency room anywhere in the county,” he said.

The group also continued discussions on a Chamber budget and IRS tax status as well as development of a Chamber brochure.

The next meeting of the Lowndes County Area Chamber of Commerce is set for 8 a.m. on Jan. 10. at Deep Woods Restaurant (aka: Mary’s Café) located at 225 S. commerce St. (AL-97 South) in Hayneville.
