At the May 16 meeting of the LCIA plans were made to host the event at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at the Hayneville Church of Christ, located at 90 N. Commerce St. (Alabama Hwy. 97).

Dr. Ozelle Hubert, president of the LCIA said the event would feature a diverse group of people and share stories.

“This program will focus on the occasion; Juneteenth,” Hubert said. “Representatives from the Lowndes County Middle School will be doing storytelling featuring Hank Aaron, Angela Davis, Condoleeza Rice, Mae Jemison and Marva Collins. It will be an interesting program.”

The event will also feature several groups and area politicians including Alabama Medicaid Expansion, Alabama State House Rep. Kelvin Lawrence, District 69; Alabama State Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier, District 23; the Tuskegee Airmen P-51C Mustang, U.S. Census 2020 and other issues including hospital care, unemployment, regional career tech center/workforce development and more.

“We will have a call for unity, a roll call of various representatives from various organizations such as the NAACP, ADC, Voters League, New South Coalition, Retired Educators/Alumni Association, sororities and fraternities, church associations, social service clubs and Masons, Eastern Star and others,” Dr. Hubert said. “All are invited to attend this historic meeting and program.”

The program coordinator for the event is the Rev. Martin McCall, pastor of the Hayneville Church of Christ.

The goal of the Lowndes County Community Improvement Association is to improve the quality of life for individuals living in Lowndes County from a holistic perspective; mentally, physical, spiritually, economically, politically, educationally, and to promote quality, affordable and accessible healthcare, according to Dr. Hubert.

Meetings of the Lowndes County Improvement Association are held on the third Thursday of the month and the next scheduled meeting is set got 6:30 p.m. on June 20 at the Hayneville Church of Christ.
