The Class 2A Calhoun varsity Lady Tigers defeated the Class 6A Wetumpka Lady Indians at home 54 to 37 to go 11-2 on the year so far, according to Lady Tigers head basketball coach Eddie Howard.

Jamiya Adams led the Lady Tigers with 15 while teammate Amber Smith scored 14 points.

Howard said Friday’s game was, “I guess the best that could be expected coming off Christmas break.” He said he does not look at individual players, but how well the team plays together as a team.
Again, he said, that was as “good as could be expected coming off Christmas break.”

The Calhoun varsity Tigers also defeated the Wetumpka Indians 78-65 at home.

Jamichel Boone led the Tigers with 20 points while Jeremy Morgan scored 16 points.

Tigers head basketball coach Ervin Starr said of his team’s play, “Over all it was good. I think we have to learn how to close games like that. Midway through the fourth quarter we were up 21 and had to hold on until the end.”

He said the contest Friday night was as total team effort with four people in double figures and six to score for “a good team win.”

Starr said the Tigers are now 13-6 on the season.

Central Athletic Director and head boys varsity basketball coach Brian Coleman said the Class 2A Central Lions defeated 2A Highland Home 63 to 54 while the Lady Lions defeated Highland Home 52 to 11 on the road.

He said Imaruion Watson led the Lions with 30 points while Kadaijah Williams and Cordasia Harris sacred 12 points each for the Lady Lions.

Coleman said following Friday night’s action, “Our girls are 9 and 2 and our boys are 5 and 4.”

He said of the boys varsity, “We played just like we had been off for three weeks, meaning we started out slow and played sloppy with a lot of fouls, which allowed Highland Home to be able to hit 20 free throws in the first half. But like I told my guys, I will take and ugly victory over a pretty loss.”
