Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Payne

Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Payne, 93, a lifelong resident of Sandy Ridge, Ala. passed away late Thursday afternoon, Nov. 15, 2018, after an extended illness. Payne was surrounded at home by her family.

Payne was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Raphael Payne; infant son, Albert Raphael Payne, Jr.; her parents, Charlie and Kate Davis of Flatwoods, Ala.; her sister, Dorothy Davis Hammonds of Fort Deposit; and her twin brothers, Bruce and Billy Davis of Flatwoods.

Payne is survived by a daughter, Dianne P Stuckey (Paul) of Fort Deposit; a son, Charles Raphael Payne (Janett) of Sandy Ridge; two grandchildren, David Wayne Henderson (Sara) of Sandy Ridge and Jennifer Kate Henderson Coghlan (Mitch) of Fort Deposit; four great grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, David Rapheal (Rafe) Henderson, Emelyn Kate and Channing Rose Coghlan. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and greats.

Payne leaves behind a special friend, Eddye Briggs of Grady, Ala.; as well as ladies, who were her angels on earth, Betty McCall of Fort Deposit, Mary Peterson of Honoraville, Deena Wilson and Kellie Sanford of Greenville. They cared for Payne as if she was their own mother.

In addition, her family wants to thank Comfort Care Hospice of Greenville for their excellent care and services. Payne leaves her favorite Hospice Nurse Emma Jackson and Hospice Certified Nursing Assistant Tammy Smith.

Payne was a hard worker all her life and will be remembered for her great love of the outdoors, including fishing and growing flowers. She truly had a green thumb. She will also be remembered as one of the South’s greatest cooks.  Her Rio Grande pork roast recipe won her a blue ribbon and she received many accolades for her lemon cheese cake throughout the years.

Funeral services will be held at her home church, Flatwoods Church of Christ, on Sunday, Nov. 18th at 2 p.m.  Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. The service will be conducted by two of her favorite preachers, Greg Wilkes of Auburn, and Chris Jones of Dothan. Southern Memorial Funeral Home of Montgomery will officiate.Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Payn
