Rebels suffer fourth straight loss, falling to Escambia 35-12

The Lowndes Academy Rebels suffered their fourth straight loss of the season Friday, Oct. 19 when they fell to regional opponent Escambia Academy 35-12 on the road.

Not counting a preseason scrimmage win over Fort Dale Academy 27-0, Friday’s loss dropped the Rebels to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in AISA Class AA Region 2 play for 2018.

The Rebels will end the regular season on the road with a chance to go 5-5 overall Friday, Oct. 26 against non-regional opponent Wilcox Academy.

After trailing the Escambia Academy Cougars 21-0 Friday night, Mason McCurdy put the Rebels on the scoreboard in the second quarter. He took in a 2-yard pass from Tyler Smith in for a touchdown to make it a 21-6 contest at the half.

But the Cougars upped their lead to 35-6 through the third quarter. And the Rebels scored the last touchdown of the night when Trevor Haney collected a 20-yard touchdown pass from Smith to make the final 35-12 in favor of Escambia.

While Lowndes Academy held the edge in passing with 170 yards to 86 yards for Escambia. The Cougars out rushed the Rebels by a whopping 171 yards, 207 yards to 36 yards on the ground.

The result was a total offense of 293 yards for Escambia to 206 yards for Lowndes.

Smith went 18/32 passing for 170 yards and two touchdowns for Lowndes. But he also suffered two interceptions in the game.

With rushing yards proving hard to come by for the Rebels, Daniel Janes was the leading rusher for Lowndes with five carries for 22 yards.

Janes led the Rebels in receiving with five catches for 46 yards, followed by John Morgan with four catches for 43 yards and Haney with six catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. McCurdy caught one pass for 2-yards and a touchdown.

John Morgan led the Rebels with four tackles while Daniel Callaway had two tackles with one assist, one sack and one tackles for loss.
