The Lady Lions defeated the Luverne Lady Tigers, Thursday, Feb. 8 by a 15-point margin 65-50 in the friendly confines of the Jackson-Steele Community Center in White Hall. The Luverne Lady Tigers will have to travel in the playoffs.

The Lady Lions were led by Derrica McCall with 14 points, Kadaijah Williams with 15 points, Cordasia Harris with 17 points.

Luverne was led by Vaniyah Williams with 21 points.

The Lady Tigers of Luverne played the Lady Lions close in the first period trailing by just four points 13-9. But by the half, the Lady Lions had a 12-point lead 34-22 and led by 15 after three periods 49-34 and the final period winning 65-50.

Lady Lions head basketball coach Terry Thomas said Kadaijah Williams gave the Lady Lions a “great spark” against Luverne hitting three or four 3-point shots in a row when he said the team needed it. “And, she is always our best defender,” he said. Thomas said Williams’ defense transferred to offense and the Lady Lions were able to hold the Lady Tigers off.

Thomas said he knew Luverne wanted to win and were playing hard too. And he said, “You know any time you play a team three or four times a year, they know you and you know them.”

But Thomas is looking for bigger things from his team. “To be quite honest,” Thomas said, “the area was not our goal this year. It is something you have to win to get to where you want to go.” Thomas said he knew his Lady Lions were capable of winning the area again. But he said, “We want to get to the regional and get a win, that would be another step.”
