Col. Randy Efferson, commander, 187th Fighter Wing, updated Lowndes County residents on the F-35 fighter jet and efforts to bring it to Montgomery at the Lowndesboro CME Church on Tuesday, Aug. 22. He made the presentation at the request of Lowndesboro Mayor Rick Pate.. Efferson said the F-16 fighter jets at Dannelly Field are timing out. But he said the F-35 would insure the Air National Guard 1,400 jobs in the local area for the next 50 plus years. He said Montgomery is competing to get the plane with five bases including Boise, Idaho, Wisconsin, Michigan, Jacksonville, Fla. and that a decision will be made in about three weeks. While Efferson said the F-35 is louder that the F-16 but that he did not think it would be noticeably louder for Lowndes County residents. Fred Guarino/Lowndes Signal.
