Former County Commissioner King charged with rape

A former Lowndes County Commission Chairman, Charlie King Jr. of Collirene has been arrested on charges of rape in the first degree.

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Jeremy A. Marvin said at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, “a former Lowndes County Commissioner, Charlie King Jr.,” a 64-year-old black male of Collirene, “was arrested for the charges of rape in the first degree.”

Marvin said the alleged victim was a “27-year-old black female.” He said the alleged incident happened in the county within the past two weeks.

“Mr. King was arrested and booked into the Lowndes County Jail. He was released after making a $30,000-dollar bond,” Marvin said.

Marvin confirmed for the Signal that King turned himself in.

Marvin  said King must appear in court for a preliminary hearing in the next coming months in the Lowndes County District Court.

When contacted for comment, Second Judicial Circuit District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer, who serves, Butler, Crenshaw and Lowndes County said, “I have no comment at this time.”

The Lowndes County Circuit Clerk’s office said King’s case has not been set for a preliminary hearing at this time.

King served on the Lowndes County Commission for 28 years prior to losing to current Commission Chairman Carnell McAlpine for the first time in 2012.
