In Friday, Sept. 2 football action, the Calhoun Tigers and Central Lions both took it on the chin in Class 2A Region 3 regional contests. But this Friday it will be a real dog…err cat fight as the arch rivals will face each other in a regional contest at Central High.
Last Friday the Central High Lions fell to Zion Chapel 41-26 on the road to go (0-3) (0-1). Their Holtville game was stopped in the second quarter due to ligtning.
And the Calhoun Tigers fell to Goshen 46-8 on the road to go (0-3) (0-1).
Scoring Central touchdowns, Londell Hill scored on a 60-yard kick return; Malek Hill scored on a 26-yard run; Jaquez Bolling scored on a 70-yard run; and David Baldwin scored on a 11-yard pass from Keegan Blackman.
Swanique Gordon, the first girl to play football for Central had five tackles and several assists.
For Calhoun, Gnald Sharpe scored on a 7-yard touchdown play and Andre Carter scored a 2-point conversion.
Central trails Calhoun in the all time series between the two schools, which will resume this Friday night 24-25, according to the Alabama High School Football History Society. And Central won last year’s game 28-26.
Regarding this Friday’s contest, head football coach Martez Graham said his Lions are “looking to tie the series.” He said he expects the game to be a “dogfight” as both teams will be looking for their first win this football season.
Graham said, “There will be a lot of excitement in the air and Central will be the place to be Friday night.”
Calhoun head football coach Bill E. Lamar said, “What can I really say,” about Friday’s contest, “the rivalry speaks for itself.”
He said, ” It has always been an intense battle between the two even when I played against Central. And there’s not much pumping nor priming taking place for this opponent,  because the guys become self motivated when it come to this rivalry.”
He added, “And I expect it to be an exciting game on Friday night. I also expect the guys to play with (heart) and determination in order to be victorious against their arch rival.”
