The Central High School Lions showed true grit at Zion Chapel, in Friday, Oct. 2 football action, but both Central and Calhoun suffered their sixth losses of the season.
Central High fell on the road Friday at Zion Chapel, but showed they have a lot of fight in them coming up on the short end of a 35-22 tussle.
Central’s Keegan Blackman scored on a 10-yard quarterback keeper; Malik Hill scored on a 15-yard run; and Jaquez Bolling scored on a 75-yard pass play. Blackman and Hill also scored 2-point plays for the Lions.
Hill had 105 yards rushing, Bolling had 180 yards rushing, and David Baldwin rushed for 85 yards.
The loss dropped the Lions to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in 2A Region 3 play. But the Lions come home Friday to host regional opponent Goshen.
The Calhoun Tigers took another one on the chin Friday night falling to regional opponent Luverne 56-8 on the road.
Calhoun’s Arthur Phifer scored his team’s lone touchdown on a 92-yard pass play. For the night Phifer had 125 yards in receptions, 60 yards rushing and 30 yards passing.
Also for Calhoun, Quintarrious Arrington had 120 yards passing, 92 of which came on the touchdown pass to Phifer. Arrington also scored the 2-point play for Calhoun.
Melvonte Fagg had a great defensive game for the Tigers with two sacks and two tackles for losses. And Lewis Smith contributed with three catches to sustain drives.
Calhoun head football coach Dewayne Williams said, “Simple mistakes are our downfall.” He said, “Hopefully with a good week of practice we can have a better outing.”
The loss at Luverne dropped the Tigers to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in 2A Region 3 play.
The Tigers will host regional opponent Highland Home on Friday.
