Despite leading 21-20 at the half, the Lowndes Academy Rebels fell to the visiting regional opponent the South Choctaw Rebels 44-21 Friday night.
The loss drops the home team Rebels to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Class A Region 2.
“We had a couple of little injuries… and they came out with a little more urgency than we did, I guess,” said Lowndes Academy head football coach Bob Taylor.
Taylor said of the visiting Rebels, “They did a good job attacking us in the second half. South Choctaw has a good football team. They’re not four and one for no reason at all.”
He said, “We’ve just got to regroup and get ready for a good Southern football team next Friday.”
In Friday’s battle of Rebels, South Choctaw drew first blood on about a 29-yard run at the 9:20 mark of the first quarter.
The visiting Rebels upped the score to 14-0 on 3-yard run and 2-point conversion at the 2:35 mark of the first quarter.
However, the Lowndes Academy Rebels would come back on a 23-yard pass from Mason McCurdy to Gray Johnson. And John Taylor would add the extra point as the home standing Rebels made it a 14-7 contest at the 11:53 mark of the second quarter.
The visiting Rebels would answer that score on a 6-yard run at the 10:25 mark of the second period to make it a 20-7 contest.
The Lowndes Academy Rebels responded with a 14-yard pass for a score of their own from McCurdy to Brian Rayburn at the 6:12 mark of the second quarter. Taylor again added the point after touchdown, and it was a 20-14 ballgame.
The home Rebels’s David Hussey would next block a South Choctaw punt. And while the punt was recovered by South Choctaw, the ball went over on downs to Lowndes Academy.
With 2:56 left in the half, the home standing Academy would take the lead 21-20 on a 60-yard pass from McCurdy to Johnson and point after by Taylor.
Unfortunately that would be the last score for the home team and South Choctaw would go on to take the win with a strong second half 44-21.
The visiting Rebels would go up 26-21 at the 7:36 mark of the third quarter, 32-21 at the 10:56 mark of the fourth quarter, 38-21 at the 5:08 mark of the fourth quarter, and finally 44-21 at the 2:18 mark of the final period.
For Lowndes Academy, McCurdy was 10 of 21 passing for 221 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.
Brandon Reid had 18 carries for 118 yards rushing; Johnson had five catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns; and Rayburn had three catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Owen Nall had nine tackles, while and Hussey had six tackles and a blocked punt.
The Lowndes Academy Rebels travel Friday to face regional opponent Southern Academy.
