Led by freshman quarterback Mason McCurdy, the Lowndes Academy Rebels suffered their first stumble in 2015 falling to Class A Region 2 opponent Patrician 28-16 on the road Friday, Sept. 1.
Rebels’ starting junior quarterback Wade Howard was injured early in the contest.
In Howard’s absence, McCurdy went 12 for 25 passing for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Also for the Rebels, Brandon Reid had 16 carries for 61 yards rushing and one touchdown in the second quarter. And Lowndes Academy’s David Hussey had nine catches for 150 yards and one touchdown.
The Rebels produced 182 yards of offense.
Defensively, Hussey had 14 tackles while Gray Johnson and Owen Nall had nine tackles each.
“Patrician had a great game plan for us and just whipped us,” said Lowndes Academy head football coach Bob Taylor. “We have to go back to work this week and get ready for a good Chambers team.”
The Patrician Saints scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion in the first quarter to go up 8-0. They added a second touchdown in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead.
In that same quarter, Lowndes Academy’s Reid scored on a 3-yard run, and McCurdy hit Hussey with a pass for the 2-point conversion to make it a 14-8 contest.
But the Saints weren’t finished in the first half, adding another touchdown and 2-point conversion to go up 22-8 and adding a touchdown just before the end of the second quarter to go up 28-8.
The Rebels managed a touchdown in the third quarter when McCurdy hit Hussey with a 58-yard touchdown strike. John Taylor then hit Hussey with a pass for the 2-point conversion to make it a 28-16 final.
The Rebels, 2-1, 1-1 will host non-regional opponent Chambers Academy this coming Friday for homecoming.
Patrician is also 2-1, 1-1 on the season.
