The Calhoun Tigers topped the Central Lions 26-8 in a scrimmage played at Calhoun High School Friday.
First year Central head football coach Martez Graham said he was impressed with his Lions to only have had seven days practice prior to the scrimmage. “We did alright, he said. “We had a few turnovers… a few missed opportunities, but hey, with seven days practice, we’re alright. I expect us to get better and better every week.”
Calhoun head football DeWayne Williams was also pleased with his team. “We like what we’re seeing… a different attitude from last year… a lot of the kids are pulling together as one.” He said, “That’s what we’ve been teaching, teamwork. And tonight it kind of showed.”
He said his first year quarterback, Demarco Jiles executed what he was taught. And Williams said he is looking for his team to have a carryover from the scrimmage for next week.
Scoring for Central was quarterback Keegan Blackman, who scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion.
Demarco Jiles threw for 225 yards and three touchdowns for Calhoun. Louis Smith had 60 yards receiving and one touchdown for the Tigers, while Demetrius Smith had 116 yards receiving and one touchdown for the Tigers. Gnald Sharpe had 40 yards receiving for one touchdown and one interception for Calhoun. And Authur Phifer had 50 yards rushing for one touchdown and one 2-point conversion for the Tigers.
Jiles also rushed for 55 yards.
Lowndes Academy also played in a scrimmage game tonight (Friday), but details are not available.
