The Central High Lions’ winning streak ended at two games in a row with a tough loss to Goshen on the road 21-14, Friday night.
The Lions trailed 14-6 with seconds to go in the first half and failed to punch the ball in on a quarterback sneak at the Goshen goal line. That led Central head football coach James Bibb Jr. to say, “We beat ourselves tonight.”
The loss to regional foe Goshen drops the Lions to 2 – 4 overall and 1-4 in Class 2A Region 3 Play.
Marcus Mitchell scored for the Lions on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Alex Bryant. Bryant returned a pass interception 60 yards for Central and a score. And Mitchell ran a 2-point conversion for the Lions to in to account for Central’s 14 points.
Also for the Lions, Jaquez Bolling rushed 14 times for 120 yards. And Diamonta Johnson led the Lions with 12 tackles.
“We played really well. We had several missed opportunities,” Bibb said.
With time running out in the first half, the Lions were unable to punch the ball in on a quarterback sneak. “We had two chances. We had it first and goal with time running down,” Bibb said. A touchdown and 2-point conversion could have tied the game at the half.
“I always tell them football is a game of inches,” Bibb said, “and we just couldn’t get the inches. But we were right there…. We beat ourselves tonight.”
Central will travel to New Brockton this coming Friday for another regional contest,.
In other football action:
The Calhoun Tigers took it on the chin again this Friday, 63-21 at Highland Home for their seventh straight loss in 2014.
The regional loss drops the Calhoun Tigers to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in Class 2A Region 3 play.
For Calhoun, Jakeem Davison scored one touchdown, and Jemarcus Davison scored two touchdowns on a 1-yard run and a 40-yard touchdown pass reception from Jakeem Davison. Jemarcus Davison kicked one extra point, and Demetric Smith scored one 2-point conversion for Calhoun.
Calhoun will travel to play Elba in another regional contest this coming Friday.
The Lowndes Academy Rebels fell to Sparta on the road 51-6 Friday.
For Lowndes Academy, Thomas Ward rushed for 110 yards, and
Gray Johnson had 30 yard in pass receptions, including a touchdown pass from Wade Howard.
Cody Harrell had 80 yards in kickoff returns, and Owen Nall led the team with seven tackles.
Lowndes Academy head football coach Todd Bradford pointed out how costly this game was to his team with one player suffering a season ending knee injury, another who suffered a concussion and three other starters who got banged up who had to come out of the game.
The loss to Class A Region 1 opponent Sparta drops the Rebels to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in regional play.
Lowndes Academy will host Sumter Academy this coming Friday.
