The Lowndes County Commission approved the proposed fiscal year 2015 budget and a new deputy coroner Monday night.
The commission approved the proposed budget including a 3 percent across the board pay raise and one-time pay increase of $500.
Also at the request of County Coroner Doris Alexander, the commission approved Cassandra Smith to serve as deputy coroner.
Commission Administrator Jackie Thomas read a letter from Alexander in which she said a stroke has made it impossible for her to perform her duties and requested that the commission approved Smith as her deputy coroner for the remainder of her term.
In the Democratic Primary election Smith received 1,942 votes or 55.84 percent to defeat incumbent Alexander with 881 votes and Carmelita Arnold with 655 votes for the position of County Coroner.
The position of deputy coroner had been filled by Lowndes County former Emergency Management Agency Director Walter S. Hill.
