The White Hall Town Council appointed Antonio Stringer as acting fire chief of the White Hall Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday night, June 5.
Mayor James Walker recommended Stringer for the post, which was approved by the council at its regular June meeting.
Stringer, a resident of the Trickum area of White Hall, said he has been active with the Collirene Volunteer Fire Department about five years.
He said Mayor Walker asked him “to be the acting chief because of his experience. “And I agreed, and I accepted to come over here and help them out,” Stringer said.
Stringer said, “I’m hoping the community will pull together and help us try to get this thing (the volunteer fire department) back on track because we’ve been off a little bit for quite a while. It’s about time for us to try to help support our own community.”
Council member Glenn Mallard expressed appreciation to Wilbert Barnfield for serving as acting police chief and Stringer for serving as acting fire chief for the town.
“We definitely needed both those areas filled,” he said.
Council member Ruby Dee Rudolph was absent from the meeting.
