The Lowndes County Commission has approved what will be “one-time bonus” for the retired county employees and supernumeraries, according to County Commission Administrator Jackie Thomas.
At its regular second Monday meeting, the commission approved a bonus that would include 29 Lowndes County retirees at an estimated cost of $12,046, according to information from the Alabama Retired State Employees Association, which Thomas provided to The Lowndes Signal.
The Association wrote, “We cannot overstate the importance of this small, one-time addition to the benefits of your retirees.”
Commission Chairman Robert Harris and Commissioner Joseph Barganier both abstained from the vote, both citing that had relatives who would stand to benefit from the action.
The commission also proclaimed the month of May as Community Action Month and announced that it will not meet on May 26.
The proclamation was approved to acknowledge the Organized Community Action Program (OCAP) for its hard work to provide programs to help low-income, disabled, elderly and unemployed persons in Lowndes County to meet their basic needs.
And as the fourth Monday of May is Memorial Day, the commission announced it will not meet until the second Monday in June, which will be the 9th.
