Letohatchee man charged with murder in stabbing death

Randall Downs, 49, of Letohatchee was arrested Wednesday afternoon for murder in connection with the Tuesday stabbing death of a Hayneville man.
According to Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office personnel, Downs was arrested at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7 and charged with murder.
As of Thursday evening, Sheriff’s Office personnel reported, Downs remained in jail at the John Hulett Detention Facility in Hayneville on a $100,000 secure bond.
A 30-year-old Lowndes County stabbing victim died Tuesday night, according to Lowndes County Assistant County Coroner/Acting County Coroner Walter S. Hill.
Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams identified the victim as Gerardo Medrano Viera.
Hill said Viera was from Hayneville, but the incident happened in Letohatchee.
He said on Wednesday, “I am having the decedent transported to the (Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences} ADFS, for an autopsy.”
Williams said “On May 6 around 6:09 p.m. we received a call from a subject in Letohatchee saying there had been a stabbing in Letohatchee.”
Sheriff’s Office personnel said the location of the alleged murder was Brown Street, Letohatchee.
Hill said Viera was stabbed Tuesday evening and transported to a hospital from which he was airlifted to Baptist South in Montgomery where he died.
