HMS janitor arrested for alleged sexual abuse resigns

A janitor at Hayneville Middle School who was arrested for enticing a child and sexual abuse second degree has resigned his position at the school.

According to Hayneville Police Chief Kelvin Mitchell, Lee Andrew Saffold, 46, of Hayneville was arrested at HMS on Thursday, Oct. 24 for an alleged incident that occurred at school on Monday, Sept. 30 based on a complaint to the Department of Human Resources.

“Upon investigation, he (Saffold) was arrested on those two charges (enticing a child and sexual abuse, second degree),” Mitchell said. “He was the janitor/custodian at the school.

Lowndes County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Boyd said Saffold resigned his position Wednesday, but it was approved by the Lowndes County Board of Education in a special called meeting held today (Thursday, Oct. 31.

“We’re in the early stages of an investigation,” Mitchell said of the arrest. “We are going to figure out if these allegations are founded and if they are, we’re going to let the judicial system take its course.”

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office officials said Saffold was out of jail after making bond at the John Hulett Detention Facility Thursday morning, Oct. 31.

He was originally be held on what was reported to be $11,000 bond by Sheriff’s Office officials.
