Pilgrims will descend upon the town of Hayneville to remember martyr Jonathan Myrick Daniels who gave his life in the Civil Rights struggle in Alabama on Saturday, Aug. 10.
The celebration of Jonathan Daniels’ life will start at the Lowndes County Courthouse Square at 11 a.m.
Ruby Sales, a nationally recognized human-rights activist, and Dr. Gloria Larry House of Michigan will speak about the positive impact that Daniels’ life continues to make.
Episcopalian seminarian Daniels and Gloria House served days in the Lowndes County jail because of their civil rights actions in 1965.
Daniels answered the call of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help register black voters in Alabama. He was shot and killed on Aug. 20, 1965, while shielding then 16-year-old Ruby Sales from a shotgun blast as she attempted to enter a store to buy something to drink.
He was added to the Episcopal Church Calendar of Saints and Martyrs in 1994.
House, now a professor of English and African-American Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, is an award winning author and poet.
Jonathan Daniels Day activities are coordinated through the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama coordinating committee.
