County organizations receive $10,000 in grants

Five Lowndes County organizations received a total of $10,000 in 2012 Black Belt Community Foundation community grants during an awards ceremony held Saturday, Sept. 8 at Wallace Community College in Selma.

Lowndes County grant recipients include the Burkville Volunteer Fire Department, Collirene Volunteer Fire Department, South Burkville Neighbors, Lowndesboro Volunteer Fire Department and Zion Homework Enrichment, which were given $2,000 each.

According to the Black Belt Foundation, the Burkville Volunteer Fire Department will use its grant to purchase automatic door openers, life saving turnout gear and firefighting equipment.

The Collirene Volunteer Fire Department will use its grant to purchase turnout gear, and the Lowndesboro Volunteer Fire Department will use its grant to purchase firefighting equipment.

South Burkville Neighbors will use their grant to install neighborhood fire hydrants to improve the safety of citizens in the Burkville area. And Zion Homework Enrichment will use their grant to support a ZHEC Computer Lab, which will provide community access to computer and business equipment while proving access to software for education enhancement.

Black Belt Community Foundation Community Associates volunteer to develop stronger Black Belt communities and organizations.

Lowndes County Community Associates include Clara Gulley, Eric Hall, Debra Harris, Aaron McCall, Quintana McPherson, Terrell Means, Arceanas Mitchum, LaStacey Taylor, Jimmie Timmons and Christopher West.
