‘Relay’ set for next Friday

The Lowndes County Relay for Life “Carnivaling for a Cure” is set for Friday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at the Russell Baseball Field in Hayneville.

This year’s goal is $35,0000. And according to Zandra Colston, event co-chairperson, the event will continue until 1 a.m. “or until the last tent is standing.”

It will be a fun night “to celebrate our survivors, to remember loved ones lost and to fight back against cancer,” said Colston.

According to Colston, there will be an opportunity to win a free party valued at $250 with a $5 raffle ticket from Taylor Made Gaming. Also, get a $5 wristband and play laser tag with Taylor Made Gaming, a hot dog and beverage.

Colston said “every penny” collected by Taylor Made Gaming will be donated to the cause.

“We are planning several fun things for youth. Parents please make sure you child waiver form is signed so they can participate in every activity,” Colston said. “Forms will be available at the entrance.”

There are 15 teams this year, and Colston and Lakeisha Griffin are event co-chairs for the Lowndes County Relay for Life. Bridgett Mills is the community representative for the American Cancer Society.

Sponsors, Colton said, are SABIC-IP, Lily Baptist Church, Dr. Johnnie M. Griffin, Taylor Made Gaming, Macedonia Baptist Church, Jimmy Davis Auto Repair, Casey Feed, A & P Automotive, Dr. Thomas and Lyn Cawthon.

Teams include the Charles Smith Courthouse Annex with captain Linda Maddox, DHR Stars with captain Jacqueline Lee, Educators Against Cancer with captain Bernard Mitchell, Greater Mount Olive Warriors with captain Vera Mickle, Hinson’s Heroes with captain Eddie Hinson, Hippy/SWAC with captain Mary Thompson, Lily Fight For Life with captain Arlean Allen, Little Union Christian Church with captain Mary Yelder, Pink Flamingos with captain Laura Gresham, SABIC Plastics with captain Deanna Richards, Snow Hillians Angels with captain Floretta Timmons, Touched by an Angle with captain William Steiner, We Fall Down But We Get Up with captain Glenda McMeans, Williams Used Cars Angels For A Cure with captain Toni Williams-Jones and Yolanda Thomas Crusaders/Friendship Church with captain Amy Jones.
