Motes wins LA’s spelling bee

Millie Motes, an eighth grade student from Lowndes Academy in Lowndesboro, earned the right to represent her school in the state Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Spelling Bee.
Motes correctly spelled “simile” to finished first in the eighth grade division at the District Five AISA Spelling Bee held Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Hayneville Baptist Church.
The event included grades four through eight and schools including Autauga, East Memorial Christian, Evangel, Hooper, Lowndes, Meadowview, Morgan and Prattville Christian.
The state event for all AISA districts was set for Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Huntingdon College.
Also representing Lowndes Academy well at the District Five event was Landon Hooper, who finished second in the fourth grade division.
Millie is the daughter of Jeanie and Richard Motes of Tyler and Landon is the son of Michelle and John Hooper of Montgomery.
“I’m just real proud of both them. They did an outstanding job,” said Lowndes Academy headmaster Chuck Insinga.
Other participants in the district event from Lowndes Academy were Grace Gothard for grade five, Logan McMahon for grade six, and Dakota Callaway for grade seven.
