The Lowndes County Education Association sponsored a celebration dinner for retired members in recognition of American Education Week.

The theme, “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility,” was reflected in the address given by Eli Seaborn, retired superintendent of Lowndes County Public Schools, said Paula Westmoreland, president of the group.

Westmoreland said Seaborn served in Lowndes County for over 30 years and his commitment to education was displayed in his speech. She also said entertainment was provided by the Lowndes County Gifted Education students who sang a selection of songs chosen by the students themselves.

“Educational professionals, whether support personnel or teachers, are educators, even when retired. We who are still in the active profession look to our retired members for inspiration. They deserve our highest honor,” said Westmoreland.

She said Lowndes County Gifted Education students who entertained included Jonathan Gary (third grade, Jackson-Steele Elementary), Christin Watson (third grade Central Elementary), Jaylin Zinn (third grade Central Elementary Elementary), Keundra Rush (sixth grade Lowndes County Middle), Malcolm Hayes (fourth grade Central Elementary), Malaka Carnes (fifth grade Jackson-Steele Elementary), Ny’Quandria Rush (fourth grade Central Elementary) and Jermarius Rudolph (sixth grade Lowndes County Middle).
