A tutorial program and health and fitness program were part of the activities at the Lowndes County Community Life Center in Mt. Willing this summer.

The center is located at Snow Hill Christian Church Disciples of Christ where Dr. Dale Braxton is pastor.

According to Dr. Braxton, registration was held June 6 and classes began on June 7 for the tutorial program.

The Snow Hill Christian Church van transported most students, but others were brought by parents and relatives, he said.

The center provided enrichment activities for students pre-school through high school with emphasis on reading (including critical thinking in science and social studies). Math, language, writing and communication skills were also taught with a large period of time focused on piano lessons, music, a gospel choir and art, according to Dr. Braxton.

The tutorial program was made available though help from RC&D (Resource Conservation and Development), The Black Belt Foundation, Lowndes County Board of Education At Risk Funds and Snow Hill Christian Church, said Dr. Braxton.

The Lowndes County Community Life Center also hosted a Summer Health and Fitness Academy sponsored by the Tuskegee University Cooperative Extension Program/The local Lowndes County Office June 13-17 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Students from Lowndes and Wilcox counties grades 5-9 were part of the program, said agents Millicent P. Braxton and George Hunter.

They said students spent the week learning about wellness, how to eat healthy to maintain weight, to count calories and to read food labels.

At the end of the program students enjoyed a food scavenger hunt at Piggly Wiggly Express and a field trip to the Interpretive Center in White Hall. The students also enjoyed an All American Cookout at the Holy Ground in Lowndesboro, said Braxton.
