The Town of Mosses took a step toward connecting residents to a newly constructed sewer lagoon Tuesday night.

Following a public hearing held at Mosses Town Hall, Mayor Walter S. Hill announced the town would apply for a $350,000 Community Development Block grant for that purpose.

The CDBG grant will not require matching local funds due to the fact the town has a population of fewer than 1,000 persons, according to Tiffany Horton of the South Central Alabama Development Commission.

Hill said this project will be to “try to have in place a full operational system for water and sewage that will treat the water and sewage” with the goal of moving residents off septic tanks to a sewage system.

Hill said the grant would actually be for Phase Two of a sewer project. He said Phase one, a $783,000 project to build the sewer lagoon, has been closed out.

Rosemary Fonck and Kathleen Salewski of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Mary Immaculate Catholic Order, both residents of Mosses, confirmed the need for the sewer system.
Fonck said, “We know it’s very needed.”

Salewski asked if persons of “low income would be connected free of charge.”
Horton said high-income residents would be charged, but she said low-income people “would be taken care of.”
